BDF – Target and Target Complex
The BDF target and target complex is a serious challenge.
- Beam power 355 kW, 1 s spill up to 2.56 MW
- Target must be as dense as possible to maximize production and reduce backgrounds
- High energy deposition per unit volume – significant heating due to beam (320 kW)
- Need of a challenging water cooling system ~200 m3/h, 20 bar Material damage due to cumulated radiation
The proposed target is:
- 120 cm long, hybrid configuration
- 60 cm TZM (4 lamda) + 60 cm W (6 lamda), Ta cladded
- 40 x 40 cm2 transversal size
- Target core in a double walled SS container
- Radiation damage effect on mechanical properties
The complex houses the target which is located 15 meters underground. A cast-iron hadron absorber encloses production target (460 m3).

The proposed work going forward is a natural continuation of the CDR study documented in EDMS 1465053 (SHiP-TP-2015-A4). The basic aim is to validate the technical choices proposed in the technical proposal and possibly study alternative scenarios.
Proposed activites:
- Analysis of the assembly, configuration and fabricability of the cladded refractory metal blocks
- Material irradiation R&D
- Feasibility of water-cooled cast iron blocks with embedded SS pipes
- Feasibility of the target water cooling system and pre-design validation + ventilation system
- Study of a He-cooled target
- Integration studies for target complex + transport/handling study
- R&D for fully metal, high flow rate and pressure-compatible water plugin
- R&D for He-vessel circulation and prototyping activities
