BDF – Extraction and Beam Transfer

The BDF facility would be served by a ~1 second duration slow resonant extraction from the SPS of 400 GeV/c protons via the existing extraction system at LSS2. The extracted beam would be transferred along the existing TT20 line to a splitter, which would direct the beam into a new short section of beam-line, which in turn would transport the beam to the target complex.

Slow extraction beam losses limit the intensity that can be extracted from SPS:

  • CNGS reached 4e19 PoT/y with fast extraction. A similar figure is targeted to be delivered to the BDF with slow extraction.
  • Slow extraction to the North Area at present aims at around 1.2e19 PoT/y with significant attention given to LSS2 activation.
  • Studies are being performed under the auspices of the SPS Losses and Activation working group and the Crystal Assisted Extraction working group (see links below).

Beamline design is the other important thread and includes:

  • Upgrade of existing TT20 (powering, PPM, BI, …)
  • New section of beamline to BDF target Dilution system (magnets, powering, …)
  • Subsystems (magnets, powering, interlocks, BI, vacuum, SU, …)
  • Infrastructure (CE, cabling, cooling, ventilation, HE, …)
  • Splitter/switch magnets
